What is Xyzal® (Levocetirizine) 5 mg?

Xyzal® is an antihistamine medication containing Levocetirizine, a drug used to alleviate allergy symptoms.

Each tablet contains 5 mg of Levocetirizine dihydrochloride, which helps reduce allergic reactions such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and hives.

Xyzal® is particularly effective in treating both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as chronic urticaria (hives).

How does Xyzal® work?

Levocetirizine, the active ingredient in Xyzal®, is an enantiomer of cetirizine and works by blocking the H1 histamine receptors.

Histamine is a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

By inhibiting the action of histamine, Levocetirizine helps prevent and relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions.

It is highly selective and effective, with a fast onset of action, often within 12 minutes of intake, and provides relief that lasts up to 24 hours.

What are the common uses of Xyzal®?

Xyzal® is used to manage and treat:

  • Allergic rhinitis: Effective for both seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis, reducing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
  • Chronic urticaria (hives): Helps alleviate itching and the formation of hives on the skin.

Who should avoid taking Xyzal®?

Xyzal® is not suitable for everyone. Avoid using this medication if you:

  • Are allergic to Levocetirizine, cetirizine, or any of the other ingredients in Xyzal®.
  • Have severe kidney problems, particularly if your creatinine clearance is less than 10 ml/min.
  • Are under 6 years of age.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider.

Are there any special precautions for using Xyzal®?

  • Kidney Function: Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment.
  • Urinary Retention: Patients with predisposing factors, such as spinal cord lesions or prostatic hyperplasia, should use Xyzal® with caution as it may increase the risk of urinary retention.
  • Lactose Intolerance: Xyzal® contains lactose, so it should not be used by individuals with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
  • Driving and Machinery: Although Xyzal® does not generally cause drowsiness, some people may experience drowsiness or fatigue. Therefore, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.

How should Xyzal® be taken?

Xyzal® should be taken orally, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water, without chewing. The recommended dosage is:

  • Adults and adolescents (12 years and older): 5 mg (1 tablet) once daily.
  • Children (6-12 years): 5 mg (1 tablet) once daily.

For elderly patients and those with kidney impairment, dosage adjustments may be necessary based on the creatinine clearance levels.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Xyzal®, take it as soon as you remember.

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule.

Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

What are the possible side effects of Xyzal®?

Xyzal® is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience side effects, including:

  • Common side effects: Headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, and fatigue.
  • Rare side effects: Increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sleep disturbances.
  • Very rare side effects: Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, and skin rashes.

If you experience severe side effects, such as difficulty breathing, swelling, or severe dizziness, seek medical attention immediately.

How should Xyzal® be stored?

Store Xyzal® in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).

Keep it out of reach of children and do not use it after the expiration date indicated on the packaging.
