What is TIMMAL® (Timolol) Eye Drops?

TIMMAL® (Timolol) Eye Drops are a topical medication used to treat various types of glaucoma and conditions related to elevated intraocular pressure. Available in 0.25% and 0.5% solutions, TIMMAL® helps lower the pressure in the eye, preventing damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to vision loss. This medication belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers, which work by decreasing the production of fluid within the eye.

What is TIMMAL® Used For?

TIMMAL® is prescribed for a variety of eye conditions, including:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Elevated intraocular pressure (increased eye pressure)
  • Glaucoma following cataract surgery
  • Secondary glaucoma
  • Congenital glaucoma (if other treatments are not effective)

In certain cases, TIMMAL® can be used in combination with other eye medications (e.g., miotics) for treating closed-angle glaucoma.

How Do You Use TIMMAL® (Timolol) Eye Drops?

For adults, the usual dose is one drop of the 0.25% solution applied to the affected eye(s) twice a day. If the desired pressure reduction is not achieved, the dosage may be increased to one drop of the 0.5% solution, twice daily. Once the intraocular pressure is stabilized, the maintenance dose may be reduced to one drop of the 0.25% solution once daily.

For best results, instill only one drop at a time and avoid direct contact between the dropper and the eye. To reduce systemic absorption, it is recommended to gently press the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) for a few minutes after administration.

What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Using TIMMAL®?

Before starting treatment with TIMMAL®, it is important to assess the patient’s overall health, particularly any history of:

  • Respiratory issues like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure or arrhythmias
  • Hypersensitivity to any components of the medication
  • Conditions like diabetes, as beta-blockers can mask symptoms of low blood sugar
  • Thyroid disorders, as they can also be masked by this medication

Can TIMMAL® Interact With Other Medications?

Yes, TIMMAL® may interact with other medications, particularly beta-blockers taken by mouth, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, and other drugs used for heart conditions. Combining these can amplify effects like low blood pressure or a slow heart rate, so it’s essential to inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of TIMMAL®?

Like any medication, TIMMAL® can cause side effects. The most common ones include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye irritation or burning sensation

Less common but more serious side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Respiratory issues like shortness of breath

If you experience severe symptoms such as chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or breathing difficulties, stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention.

How Should TIMMAL® Be Stored?

Store TIMMAL® at a temperature between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F), away from light and out of reach of children.

Once opened, the bottle should be discarded after four weeks to ensure the effectiveness of the medication.
