What is TABEX?

TABEX is a medicine used to support adults who have a serious intention to stop smoking. It contains cytisine 1.5 milligrams, a plant-derived alkaloid isolated from Cytisus laburnum.

Cytisine has a chemical structure similar to nicotine and interacts with nicotine receptors in the body.

By competing with nicotine at these receptors, TABEX may help gradually reduce nicotine dependence symptoms during a structured treatment course.

The recommended course lasts 25 days, with the number of tablets reduced step by step according to the dosing schedule.

TABEX tablets are taken by mouth, swallowed whole with enough water, and are intended to be used together with a firm decision to stop smoking.

How does TABEX Cytisine work?

TABEX works through cytisine, which competitively binds to nicotine receptors.

This action helps prevent nicotine from fully attaching to these receptors and limits nicotine-related stimulation of the dopamine system, which is connected with dependence mechanisms.

As treatment continues, symptoms linked with nicotine dependence may gradually decrease.

Stopping smoking should take place no later than the fifth day after starting TABEX.

Continuing to smoke while taking TABEX may increase nicotine-related side effects.

What is TABEX used for?

TABEX is used for chronic nicotine dependence, also known as tobacco dependence, as part of a smoking cessation plan.

It is suitable only for people who are strongly motivated to quit smoking and follow the full dosing schedule.

How should TABEX tablets be taken?

Take TABEX tablets orally, whole, with a sufficient amount of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets. The standard treatment duration is 25 days.

  1. Days 1 to 3: take 1 tablet every 2 hours, up to 6 tablets daily.
  2. Days 4 to 12: take 1 tablet every 2.5 hours, up to 5 tablets daily.
  3. Days 13 to 16: take 1 tablet every 3 hours, up to 4 tablets daily.
  4. Days 17 to 20: take 1 tablet every 5 hours, up to 3 tablets daily.
  5. Days 21 to 25: take 1 to 2 tablets daily.

During the first three days, the number of cigarettes smoked is expected to decrease gradually. If the result is not satisfactory, treatment should be stopped, and another course may be considered after 2 to 3 months.

Who should not use TABEX?

TABEX should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to cytisine or any other ingredient, recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina, clinically significant heart rhythm disorders, recent stroke, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

TABEX is not recommended for people under 18 years of age or over 65 years of age.

It is also not recommended in patients with kidney or liver impairment due to limited clinical experience.

What precautions are important before using TABEX?

Extra caution is needed in people with heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, cerebrovascular disease, blocked blood vessels, thyroid overactivity, peptic ulcer disease, diabetes, adrenal tumors, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or certain mental health conditions.

Tell a healthcare professional about any medicines being used, especially theophylline, ropinirole, clozapine, tacrine, medicines affecting acetylcholine activity, statins, or medicines for lowering blood pressure. TABEX should not be used together with anti-tuberculosis medicines.
