What is Skinoren?
Skinoren is a topical medicine containing azelaic acid, a well-established ingredient used in the management of acne-prone skin. Available as Skinoren Gel 15% and Skinoren Cream 20%, this treatment is applied directly to affected areas to help improve the appearance of acne lesions and support clearer-looking skin.
Skinoren works through multiple mechanisms that target important factors associated with acne development. By helping reduce clogged pores, limiting the growth of acne-associated bacteria, and calming visible inflammation, Skinoren offers a comprehensive approach for individuals experiencing mild to moderate acne. The gel formulation is also indicated for the local treatment of papulopustular rosacea.
How Does Skinoren Work?
Skinoren contains azelaic acid, which helps normalize the process of keratinization within the skin. Excess keratin production may contribute to blocked pores and the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. By supporting normal skin cell turnover, Skinoren helps reduce pore blockage and the appearance of comedones.
Another important action of Skinoren is its ability to help control the growth of bacteria associated with acne. Unlike antibiotics, azelaic acid does not contribute to bacterial resistance, making it suitable for long-term use when required.
Skinoren also helps reduce visible redness and inflammatory lesions associated with acne. Through these combined effects, it addresses several of the key factors involved in acne-prone skin.

How Should Skinoren Be Applied?
Before application, cleanse the skin using water or a mild cleansing product and gently dry the treated area. Skinoren should be applied to clean, dry skin.
A thin, even layer should be spread over the affected areas and gently rubbed in. Approximately 2.5 cm of gel or cream, equal to around 0.5 g, is generally sufficient for the entire face.
Skinoren is typically applied twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Consistent application throughout the treatment period is important for achieving optimal results.
When Can Results Be Expected?
Many users begin noticing visible improvement after approximately four weeks of regular use.
However, acne treatment requires patience, and continued use for several months may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and individual response.
Regular use according to instructions helps maximize the benefits of therapy.
What Precautions Should Be Taken During Use?
Skinoren is intended for external use only. Contact with the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes should be avoided. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
Hands should be washed after each application. Individuals using Skinoren for rosacea may benefit from avoiding alcohol-based cleansers, abrasive products, exfoliants, and astringents that could increase skin sensitivity.
Both formulations contain benzoic acid and propylene glycol, ingredients that may cause mild irritation in some individuals.
What Side Effects May Occur?
The most commonly reported side effects include burning, itching, redness, dryness, peeling, irritation, and discomfort at the application site. These reactions are generally mild and often decrease as treatment continues.
Less commonly, some users may experience contact dermatitis, swelling, rash, changes in skin color, hives, or increased skin sensitivity. Rare hypersensitivity reactions have also been reported.
If excessive irritation develops, reducing the amount applied or decreasing application frequency to once daily may help improve tolerability.
