What is Clodifen gel?

Clodifen (Diclofenac) Gel 5% is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) designed for external use to help reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling.

This easy-to-apply gel contains 5% diclofenac sodium, a powerful ingredient known for its effectiveness in treating joint and muscle discomfort.

Ideal for those with degenerative joint diseases, such as knee osteoarthritis, and soft tissue rheumatic conditions, Clodifen Gel also assists with injuries and sports-related strains.

What is Clodifen Gel Used For?

Clodifen Gel is commonly applied to relieve pain and inflammation in the following cases:

  • Degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis, especially of the knee and other joints.
  • Rheumatic conditions in soft tissues, including tendinitis, tenosynovitis, shoulder capsulitis, and inflammation of muscles and fascia.
  • Injuries and sports-related issues such as ligament sprains, bruises, and dislocations.
  • Inflammation of superficial veins as a supplementary treatment.

It’s important to consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist beyond three days of using Clodifen Gel.

How Do You Apply Clodifen Gel?

To use Clodifen Gel:

  1. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-3 times daily.
  2. Rub the gel gently until fully absorbed.
  3. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and any open wounds.
  4. After application, wipe hands with a dry towel and wash thoroughly unless treating hands directly.

For those using iontophoresis treatments, apply the gel on the negative pole (cathode) to enhance effectiveness.

What Should You Know Before Using Clodifen Gel?

Before starting Clodifen Gel, consider the following contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to diclofenac or any of the ingredients.
  • Allergies to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Open wounds or skin infections.
  • Third trimester of pregnancy.

Children and teenagers should avoid using Clodifen Gel due to lack of safety data.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects?

While Clodifen Gel is generally well-tolerated, side effects may occur:

  • Common: Skin reactions like dermatitis, rash, redness, or itching.
  • Rare: Blistering, hives, or photosensitivity.
  • Very Rare: Allergic reactions, including angioedema or asthma.

If you notice any side effects, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.

Can Clodifen Gel Be Used During Pregnancy or Lactation?

Due to its prostaglandin inhibition, which may affect fetal development, Clodifen Gel should be used sparingly in early pregnancy only if essential.

Avoid use in the third trimester to prevent complications for both mother and baby.

For breastfeeding mothers, application on the breast or large areas of skin is not advised to avoid any impact on the infant.

How Should Clodifen Gel Be Stored?

  • Store at temperatures below 25ºC (77ºF) and keep out of reach of children.
  • Shelf life: 3 years. Avoid using past the expiration date for safety and effectiveness.

What Should You Do in Case of an Accidental Overdose?

An overdose from topical application is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. However, if Clodifen Gel is accidentally ingested, symptoms similar to oral diclofenac overdose may occur. Seek immediate medical attention, and consider stomach evacuation measures such as activated charcoal, particularly if ingested recently.
