What is Albezol® (Albendazole)?

Albezol® is an antiparasitic medication containing albendazole, which is widely used to treat various parasitic infections.

Each tablet contains 400 mg of albendazole and is formulated to combat a range of intestinal and systemic infections caused by parasitic worms.

This medication is part of the benzimidazole class, which is known for its effectiveness in eliminating worms from the body.

It works by inhibiting the parasites' ability to absorb essential nutrients, ultimately killing them and allowing the body to expel them naturally.

Albezol® is a commonly prescribed treatment for both adults and children, although its use in children under six should be closely monitored by a healthcare professional.

How does Albezol® work?

Albendazole, the active ingredient in Albezol®, acts by preventing parasitic worms from absorbing the sugar they need to survive. This starves the parasites, leading to their eventual death. Once the parasites die, the body eliminates them through natural processes. Albendazole is effective against a variety of nematode (worm) infections and other systemic parasitic infections, making it a versatile and valuable treatment in areas where parasitic diseases are common.

It is especially useful for both intestinal and skin infections, including parasitic infestations caused by roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and more. In systemic infections, where parasites invade various parts of the body beyond the intestines, such as the muscles or central nervous system, albendazole’s effectiveness in targeting these deep-seated infections makes it the preferred choice for treating parasitic diseases.

What infections does Albezol® treat?

Albezol® is highly effective in treating a variety of parasitic infections, including:

  1. Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis): Pinworms are a common intestinal parasite, especially among children. Albezol® kills these worms effectively, relieving symptoms such as itching and discomfort.

  2. Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides): Roundworms cause one of the most common parasitic infections worldwide. Albendazole works quickly to eliminate these parasites from the intestines.

  3. Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus): These parasites can cause anemia and malnutrition by feeding on the blood of the host. Albezol® targets the adult worms, leading to their expulsion from the body.

  4. Whipworm (Trichuris trichiura): Whipworms can cause significant gastrointestinal distress, including diarrhea and abdominal pain. Albendazole effectively eliminates this parasite.

  5. Strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis): Strongyloides is a parasitic worm that can cause severe complications, especially in people with weakened immune systems. Albendazole helps to clear this infection when taken as directed.

  6. Tapeworm infections (Taenia saginata, Taenia solium): Albezol® is used to treat certain tapeworm infections, though it is typically recommended only when these infections co-occur with other parasitic infections that are sensitive to albendazole.

  7. Giardiasis (Giardia intestinalis): Giardiasis is a protozoal infection affecting the intestines, causing symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Albendazole can be used to treat giardiasis in some cases.

In addition to these common intestinal infections, Albezol® is also effective for treating systemic parasitic infections, such as:

  • Trichinellosis (Trichinella spiralis): A systemic infection caused by consuming undercooked meat, typically pork. This infection can affect the muscles and other tissues. Albendazole is most effective when started early in the course of infection.

What precautions should you take before using Albezol®?

Before starting treatment with Albezol®, there are a few key precautions to consider:

  • Allergies: If you have a known allergy to albendazole or any of the ingredients in the tablet, Albezol® should not be taken.
  • Pregnancy: Albezol® is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, due to potential risks to the developing fetus. Women of childbearing age should ensure they are using effective contraception during treatment and for at least one month after stopping the medication.
  • Breastfeeding: Albendazole can pass into breast milk, and there may be a risk to the nursing infant. It is generally advised to avoid breastfeeding during treatment and for at least 48 hours after taking the last dose.
  • Children under 6 years old: The use of Albezol® in children under six is not recommended unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare provider. In these cases, alternative formulations, such as suspensions, may be used.
  • Liver and blood conditions: Albezol® can affect liver function and blood cell counts, especially during long-term treatment for systemic infections. Regular monitoring of liver enzymes and blood counts is recommended during prolonged use.

What side effects might occur with Albezol® use?

Like any medication, Albezol® may cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Mild side effects: These can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Most of these symptoms are temporary and resolve after completing the treatment course.

  • Liver issues: Albendazole can cause an increase in liver enzymes, indicating stress on the liver. In rare cases, more serious liver conditions, such as hepatitis, may occur. It is important to monitor liver function during treatment, especially in patients receiving long-term therapy.

  • Bone marrow suppression: Albezol® can sometimes lead to a reduction in the production of blood cells, which can result in anemia, low white blood cell counts, or low platelet counts. This side effect is more likely in patients taking higher doses for extended periods.

In rare cases, more serious reactions such as severe skin rashes or allergic reactions may occur. If any severe side effects develop, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

How should Albezol® be taken?

  • Take Albezol® with food to improve absorption.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions for the correct dosage and duration based on the type of infection.
  • For some infections, a single dose may be enough.
  • In other cases, you may need to take the medication for several days or weeks.
  • For infections like pinworms, a second dose may be required one week after the first to prevent reinfection.
  • For serious or systemic infections, higher doses and longer treatment periods might be necessary.
  • Be sure to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve early.
  • If swallowing the tablet is difficult, you can chew or crush it and take it with water.

  • How should Albezol® be stored?

Store Albezol® in a dry place at a temperature below 25°C (77°F), away from light and moisture.

Keep the medication out of reach of children to avoid accidental ingestion.

Do not use the medication beyond its expiration date, which is typically three years after the manufacturing date.
