What is Acnecutane®?
Acnecutane® is a medication used primarily for the treatment of severe acne. Its active ingredient, Isotretinoin, is a derivative of Vitamin A that significantly reduces the activity and size of the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. This reduction helps decrease the production of oil and thus prevents acne formation.
How Does Acnecutane® Work?
The exact mechanism of how Isotretinoin works is not fully understood. However, it is known to improve severe acne by reducing the size and activity of sebaceous glands, leading to less oil production. This creates a less favorable environment for acne-causing bacteria, helping to clear up the skin. Additionally, Isotretinoin has anti-inflammatory properties, which further aid in treating acne.
What Are the Ingredients in Acnecutane®?
Acnecutane® capsules are available in two strengths: 8 mg and 16 mg.
For Acnecutane® 8 mg capsules:

What Are the Benefits of Acnecutane®?
Acnecutane® is highly effective in treating severe forms of acne, including nodular and cystic acne, which do not respond to other treatments. By normalizing the differentiation of cells and stimulating regenerative processes, Acnecutane® helps achieve clearer skin and reduces the risk of scarring.
What Should I Know About Acnecutane® Usage?
Acnecutane® should be taken with food to enhance its absorption. The dosage varies based on the severity of the acne and the patient's weight, typically starting at 0.4 mg/kg per day and can go up to 2 mg/kg per day for very severe cases. Treatment usually lasts between 16 to 24 weeks. It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and not to alter it without consulting your healthcare provider.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Most side effects of Acnecutane® are dose-dependent and reversible upon dosage adjustment or discontinuation. Common side effects include dryness of the skin, lips, and mucous membranes, as well as muscle and joint pain. Severe side effects can include increased blood lipids, liver enzyme alterations, and mood changes. Regular monitoring by a healthcare provider is necessary to manage these potential effects.
Can Everyone Use Acnecutane®?
Acnecutane® is not suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated during pregnancy due to its high risk of causing severe birth defects. Women of childbearing age must use effective contraception and have regular pregnancy tests before, during, and after treatment. It is also not recommended for individuals with liver disease, high blood lipid levels, or hypersensitivity to its components.
How Should Acnecutane® Be Stored?
Store Acnecutane® capsules in a dry place, protected from light, and out of reach of children. The ideal storage temperature is not higher than 25°C (77°F). Do not use the medication beyond its expiration date.
What Precautions Should Be Taken?
Patients should avoid deep chemical dermabrasion and laser treatments during and up to 5-6 months after treatment with Acnecutane® due to the risk of scarring. It's also important to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF. Regular blood tests to monitor liver function and lipid levels are crucial throughout the treatment.
By understanding these key points, users can better appreciate the benefits and responsibilities associated with Acnecutane® therapy, leading to safer and more effective acne treatment.
