What is Doxylan® (Doxycycline) 100 mg?

Doxylan® is a medication that contains the active ingredient doxycycline, an antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline class.

Doxycycline is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible microorganisms.

It is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections, among others.

Each tablet of Doxylan® typically contains 100 mg of doxycycline, making it effective in combating both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

What Are the Ingredients and Form of Doxylan®?

Each Doxylan® tablet contains 115.4 mg of doxycycline hyclate, equivalent to 100 mg of doxycycline.

Alternatively, the medication may also be available with 208.2 mg of doxycycline monohydrate, equivalent to 200 mg of doxycycline.

The tablets are typically packaged in blister packs containing 5 or 10 tablets per pack.

How Does Doxylan® Work?

Doxylan® exerts its antibacterial effect by blocking the synthesis of proteins in the cells of sensitive bacteria.

This action prevents the bacteria from growing and multiplying, ultimately leading to their death.

Doxycycline is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Escherichia coli, among others.

However, some bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and certain strains of Bacteroides fragilis, may be resistant to this antibiotic.

What Infections Does Doxylan® Treat?

Doxylan® is indicated for the treatment of various infections, including:

  • Respiratory infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, pleural empyema.
  • Ear, nose, and throat infections: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis.
  • Gastrointestinal infections: Including those affecting the biliary tract.
  • Urinary and genital infections: Pyelonephritis, prostatitis, endometritis, gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Purulent skin infections, osteomyelitis.
  • Other infections: Typhus, brucellosis.

What Are the Contraindications of Doxylan®?

Doxylan® should not be used by individuals who have a known hypersensitivity to doxycycline or other tetracyclines.

It is also contraindicated in children under 8 years of age due to the risk of permanent tooth discoloration.

Pregnant women should avoid this medication during the second half of pregnancy.

How Should Doxylan® Be Taken?

For adults and children over 50 kg, the usual starting dose is 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100-200 mg daily.

For children over 8 years old and under 50 kg, the dose is calculated based on body weight, starting with 4 mg/kg on the first day and then 2-4 mg/kg daily thereafter.

Specific infections may require different dosing regimens:

  • Beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections: Treatment should last at least 10 days.
  • Gonorrhea: Males typically take 200-300 mg daily for 2-4 days, while females take 200 mg daily for 5 days.
  • Primary and secondary syphilis: 300 mg daily for at least 10 days.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Doxylan®?

Common side effects of Doxylan® include gastrointestinal disturbances such as anorexia, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea.

Other potential side effects are photosensitivity, allergic reactions such as rashes and urticaria, and hematological effects like hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia.

Rarely, it may cause serious conditions like pericarditis and exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus.

How Should Doxylan® Be Stored?

Doxylan® should be stored in a place protected from light, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).

It must be kept out of reach of children.

The shelf life of the medication is 5 years, and it should not be used beyond the expiration date indicated on the packaging.
