What is VALTREX® (Valaciclovir)?
VALTREX® is an antiviral medication used to manage infections caused by herpes viruses. It contains valaciclovir 500 mg, which your body quickly transforms into aciclovir – an active agent that blocks virus replication. This action helps reduce symptoms and speeds up recovery. VALTREX® is commonly prescribed for treating herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and cold sores, while also helping prevent recurrences and transmission to others.
Each package includes 10 film-coated tablets, and the product should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 30°C (86°F).
How does VALTREX® work in the body?
VALTREX® interferes with the herpes virus's ability to multiply. Inside the body, valaciclovir is rapidly converted into aciclovir, which targets viral DNA synthesis. This process halts the virus’s replication and limits its spread. The medication acts specifically in infected cells, thanks to virus-specific enzymes, reducing the risk to healthy tissue.
This mode of action makes VALTREX® effective against various herpes viruses, including types 1 and 2 of the herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, and others.
What conditions does VALTREX® treat?
