What is Ultraproct® (Fluocortolone)?

Ultraproct® is a medication available in ointment and suppository forms, used to treat conditions such as internal and external hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and proctitis.

Its active ingredients include fluocortolone, a corticosteroid, and cinchocaine hydrochloride, a local anesthetic, which work together to reduce inflammation, itching, and pain.

This treatment is applied locally for maximum relief with minimal systemic effects.

What are the uses of Ultraproct®?

Ultraproct® is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Internal and external hemorrhoids
  • Anal fissures
  • Proctitis (inflammation of the rectum)

By addressing these conditions, the medication alleviates symptoms such as swelling, discomfort, and itching, promoting faster healing.

How should Ultraproct® be applied?

For Ultraproct® ointment, apply a small amount (about the size of a pea) to the affected area twice a day, ideally after bowel movements. On the first day of treatment, for quicker relief, you may apply it up to four times. For internal application, use the included applicator. The treatment should continue for at least one week after symptoms disappear, but no longer than four weeks to avoid potential side effects.

For Ultraproct® suppositories, insert one suppository daily, preferably after a bowel movement. If symptoms improve, continue treatment for one more week, using one suppository every other day to prevent relapse.

What precautions should be taken when using Ultraproct®?

  • Avoid contact with eyes and wash your hands thoroughly after applying the ointment.
  • If you have a history of viral infections (e.g., chickenpox) or are in the first trimester of pregnancy, Ultraproct® may not be suitable for you.
  • This product may reduce the effectiveness of latex-based contraceptives, like condoms, so extra precaution is advised.
  • In case of fungal infections, additional antifungal treatment may be required.

Are there any potential side effects?

While side effects are rare, they can include:

  • Mild skin reactions such as irritation or burning.
  • Skin thinning with prolonged use.
  • In very rare cases, vision problems like blurred vision or glaucoma due to the corticosteroid content.

Can Ultraproct® be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is limited data on the use of Ultraproct® during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. Animal studies suggest potential risks to fetal development, so the use of this medication should be carefully considered, weighing the risks and benefits. Similarly, breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before use.

What should you do in case of an overdose?

An overdose of Ultraproct® is unlikely to cause severe symptoms, especially with external application. However, if accidentally ingested, symptoms may include cardiovascular issues (such as slowed heart rate) or central nervous system effects (such as seizures). In such cases, seek medical attention promptly.

How should Ultraproct® be stored?

  • Ointment: Store at a temperature below 25°C (77°F).
  • Suppositories: Keep refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C (36°F to 46°F). If they soften, place them in cold water while still in the packaging until they regain their firmness.

Always keep this medication out of the reach of children and do not use it past its expiration date.
