What is Taflotan® (Tafluprost) Eye Drops?

Taflotan® is a medication used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This medicine belongs to the group of prostaglandin analogs, which help to reduce eye pressure by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye. Taflotan® comes in the form of eye drops, with a concentration of 15 mcg/ml in a 2.5 ml bottle.

How Does Taflotan® Work?

Taflotan® (Tafluprost) works by mimicking a naturally occurring substance in the eye known as prostaglandin. Prostaglandins help to lower the pressure inside the eye by increasing the drainage of fluid. This action helps prevent damage to the optic nerve, which can result from high intraocular pressure.

Who Can Use Taflotan®?

Taflotan® is indicated for adults aged 18 and older. It is especially recommended for patients who:

• Have insufficient response to first-line glaucoma treatments
• Cannot tolerate other first-line treatments or have contraindications to them
• Require additional therapy alongside beta-blockers

What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Using Taflotan®?

Before starting treatment with Taflotan®, it is important to be aware of potential side effects, such as excessive eyelash growth, darkening of the eyelid skin, and increased pigmentation of the iris. These changes might be permanent and can lead to differences in appearance between the treated and untreated eyes.

Patients with certain conditions, such as neovascular, closed-angle, narrow-angle, or congenital glaucoma, should consult their doctor, as there is limited experience with Taflotan® in these cases. Caution is also advised for patients with aphakia, pseudophakia with damaged lens capsules, or those at risk of macular edema or iritis/uveitis.

How Should Taflotan® Be Used?

The recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. It's important to administer the dose consistently once a day, as more frequent use can reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Special Instructions for Use

• Remove Contact Lenses: Ensure contact lenses are removed before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
• Prevent Contamination: Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye or eyelid.
• Proper Application: Apply the drop and then gently close the eyelids to reduce systemic absorption.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects?

Common Side Effects

• Conjunctival hyperemia (redness)
• Eye itching, irritation, pain
• Eyelash changes (length, thickness, number)
• Dry eyes, eye discharge, foreign body sensation

Rare Side Effects

• Eyelid pigmentation
• Eyelid swelling, discomfort, or allergy
• Blurred vision, photophobia, increased tear production

In very rare cases, there have been reports of corneal calcification associated with the use of phosphate-containing eye drops in patients with severe corneal damage.

What Should Be Done in Case of Overdose?

Overdose of Taflotan® is unlikely when used as directed. However, if an overdose occurs, treatment should be symptomatic. If you have any concerns or experience severe side effects, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

How to Store Taflotan®?

Taflotan® should be stored in its original packaging at temperatures not exceeding 25°C (77°F). Keep it out of reach of children and do not use it beyond the expiration date. Once opened, the bottle should be used within 4 weeks.
