Ingredient: Rizatriptan

What is Rizoptan and How Does It Work?

Rizoptan, with the active ingredient rizatriptan, is a medication primarily used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks in adults, whether they are accompanied by an aura or not. It falls under a class of medications known as selective serotonin (5-HT1) receptor agonists. This type of medication works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain, reducing substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.

When Should You Not Take Rizoptan?

  1. Allergy: Do not take Rizoptan if you are allergic to rizatriptan or any other components of the medication.

  2. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): Avoid Rizoptan if you are currently taking or have taken MAOIs within the last two weeks.

  3. Liver or Kidney Problems: It's contraindicated in severe liver or kidney disease.

  4. Cerebrovascular or Ischemic Heart Diseases: Those with a history of stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or any form of coronary artery disease, including angina, heart attack, or silent ischemia, should not use it.

  5. Uncontrolled Hypertension: Avoid if you have moderate to severe hypertension, or mild hypertension that is not controlled.

  6. Peripheral Vascular Disease: Avoid in case of peripheral vascular diseases.

  7. Serotonin Receptor Agonists and Ergotamines: Do not use concurrently with other 5-HT1B/1D agonists or ergotamine derivatives.

  8. Rare Hereditary Problems: Not suitable for patients with rare hereditary problems like lactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

What Should You Know Before Taking Rizoptan?

  1. Interactions with Other Medications: Be cautious about interactions with ergotamine, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and beta-blockers like propranolol. These combinations can increase the risk of coronary artery vasoconstriction and hypertension.

  2. Special Warnings: Not for preventive use. Swallow whole with water. Only prescribe to patients with a confirmed diagnosis of migraine. Not recommended for atypical headaches that might indicate serious conditions like stroke or aneurysm. If chest pain or tightness occurs, stop taking and consult a doctor. Requires pre-treatment assessment for patients with potential heart diseases.

  3. 3. Dizziness and Drowsiness: Can cause drowsiness or dizziness, affecting the ability to perform tasks that require attention.

How Should You Take Rizoptan?

  1. Dosage and Administration: The recommended dose is 10 mg. Do not use Rizoptan for preventive purposes. The tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed, with a sufficient amount of liquid.

  2. Timing for Repeat Doses: If needed, you can take a second dose after at least 2 hours have passed since the first dose. Within a 24-hour period, do not exceed two doses.

  3. Response to Treatment: If there's no relief after the first dose during an attack, taking a second dose for the same attack is not likely to be effective. However, Rizoptan may be effective in subsequent migraine attacks.

  4. Special Dosage Considerations: For certain patients, such as those on propranolol, with mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment, a lower dose of 5 mg is recommended. At least 2 hours should elapse between two doses, and no more than 2 doses should be taken within 24 hours.

What if There's a Recurrence of Headache?

If the headache returns after an initial improvement, you may take another dose, respecting the dosing limits mentioned above.

What Should You Do in Case of Overdose?

In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is necessary. Overdose can lead to more serious cardiovascular symptoms. Clinical and ECG monitoring for at least 12 hours is advised, even if no symptoms are present.

Additional Instructions
