What is Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops?

Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops is a medication used to reduce elevated eye pressure in individuals with conditions such as open-angle glaucoma and other forms of ocular hypertension. Its active ingredient, timolol maleate (5 mg/ml), belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-blockers, which work by decreasing the production of fluid within the eye, helping to lower intraocular pressure.

What are the uses of Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops?

Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops are primarily used to treat:

  • Open-angle glaucoma: A condition that gradually increases pressure in the eye.
  • Elevated intraocular pressure (ocular hypertension): This can occur after cataract surgery or other eye conditions.
  • Secondary glaucoma: Resulting from other eye issues.
  • As an adjunct treatment for closed-angle glaucoma: Combined with other medications like miotics to reduce pressure.

How should you use Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops?

It is essential to use Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops as directed by your ophthalmologist. The usual dose is 1 drop in the affected eye(s) once or twice daily. If the pressure normalizes, your doctor may reduce the dosage to once a day.

To enhance the effectiveness and reduce systemic absorption, it is recommended to press gently on the inner corner of your eye (near the nose) and keep your eyes closed for 2 minutes after applying the drops.

What precautions should be taken before using Oftan® Timolol?

Before using Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions, especially:

  • Respiratory problems: Such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Heart conditions: Like heart failure or slow heartbeat.
  • Hypersensitivity to timolol or other beta-blockers.
  • Diabetes or thyroid disorders: As timolol can mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia or hyperthyroidism.

Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure is recommended during treatment, as the drug's effectiveness may vary over time.

Can you use Oftan® Timolol with contact lenses?

Oftan® Timolol contains benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and potentially cause eye irritation. It is advisable to remove contact lenses before applying the eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

What are the side effects of Oftan® Timolol?

Common side effects of Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops may include:

  • Eye irritation: Such as burning, itching, or redness.
  • Headaches.

Less common side effects may include:

  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia).
  • Difficulty breathing (especially in patients with pre-existing respiratory issues).
  • Dry eyes or corneal sensitivity.

If any severe side effects occur, such as difficulty breathing or a significant decrease in heart rate, seek medical help immediately.

How should Oftan® Timolol Eye Drops be stored?

Store Oftan® Timolol at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F) and keep it in a dry, dark place away from direct sunlight.

After opening the bottle, it should be used within 28 days. Keep it out of reach of children.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Oftan® Timolol, apply it as soon as you remember.

However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule.

Avoid applying two doses to make up for the missed one.

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use Oftan® Timolol?

Oftan® Timolol should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if absolutely necessary and under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Although beta-blockers like timolol are found in breast milk, they are unlikely to affect nursing infants in clinically significant amounts.
