What is METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo?
METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo are advanced vaginal suppositories formulated with two active ingredients, Metronidazole and Miconazole, which work together to treat a range of bacterial and fungal infections in the vaginal area.
Metronidazole is effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, making it ideal for infections like trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis.
On the other hand, Miconazole acts as a powerful antifungal, specifically targeting Candida species, which are responsible for common yeast infections.
This dual approach helps relieve uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, burning, and abnormal discharge, promoting both symptom relief and recovery.
The two versions cater to different treatment needs:
- METROMICON contains 100 mg each of Metronidazole and Miconazole, suitable for standard cases of infection.
- METROMICON-Neo has an increased concentration of 500 mg Metronidazole with 100 mg Miconazole, designed for more resistant or recurrent infections.
These suppositories offer a broad-spectrum approach to vaginal health, making them suitable for mixed infections and cases where other treatments may have failed.
When are METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo used?
Both METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo are prescribed for:
- Trichomonas-related vaginitis (infection due to Trichomonas vaginalis)
- Candida-induced vulvovaginitis (commonly known as a yeast infection)
- Bacterial vaginosis (including Gardnerella-induced infections)
- Mixed infections involving bacteria and fungi
The choice between the two formulations depends on the severity and recurrence of infection, with METROMICON-Neo often recommended for more resistant or recurrent infections.
How should METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo be used?
Use these products strictly as directed by a healthcare provider:
- METROMICON: Generally, insert one suppository once daily before bed for a duration of 7–10 days.
- METROMICON-Neo: Often prescribed at a higher dose of two suppositories per day (morning and night) for 7 days, or up to 14 days in cases of persistent infections.
For best results, insert the suppository deep into the vagina while lying down, as this position facilitates correct placement.
What precautions are necessary when using METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo?
Both versions of METROMICON require the following precautions:
- Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment to ensure efficacy and avoid reinfection.
- Abstain from alcohol during and up to 48 hours post-treatment, as interactions can lead to adverse reactions like nausea, flushing, and abdominal pain.
- Be cautious with barrier contraceptives (e.g., condoms, diaphragms), as these may be weakened by the suppository base.
What are the potential side effects of METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo?
Side effects are similar for both products and are generally mild. However, some patients may experience:
- Common reactions: Mild burning or irritation in the vaginal area
- Less common side effects: Nausea, headache, or abdominal discomfort
- Rare but serious reactions: Allergic symptoms, such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, which require immediate medical attention
How should METROMICON and METROMICON-Neo be stored?
To maintain their effectiveness:
- Store both products in a cool, dry place below 25°C (77°F) and keep out of children’s reach.
- Avoid freezing the suppositories.
