What is MAXIFLOX (Moxifloxacin) Eye Drops?

MAXIFLOX eye drops contain the active ingredient moxifloxacin, which is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is primarily used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by bacteria that are sensitive to moxifloxacin. The eye drops come in a 5 mg/ml concentration and are packaged in a 5 ml bottle. The solution appears as a clear, greenish-yellow liquid.

How do MAXIFLOX Eye Drops work?

Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting enzymes that bacteria need to replicate and repair their DNA, specifically DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. By disrupting these processes, moxifloxacin prevents the bacteria from multiplying, leading to their eventual death. This makes it highly effective in treating a variety of bacterial infections in the eye.

What bacteria does MAXIFLOX target?

MAXIFLOX is active against a wide range of bacteria, including:

  • Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  • Gram-negative bacteria like Haemophilus influenzae and Klebsiella species.
  • Other organisms like Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

How should MAXIFLOX Eye Drops be used?

For adults and children over the age of one, the recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye three times a day. Improvement in symptoms is typically observed after 5 days of treatment, but the course should be continued for 2-3 more days to ensure the infection is fully eradicated. If no improvement is seen after 5 days, consult your doctor to reassess the treatment plan.

It is important to avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface to prevent contamination. After administering the drops, gently press on the tear duct for 2-3 minutes to reduce absorption into the bloodstream.

Who should avoid using MAXIFLOX Eye Drops?

MAXIFLOX should not be used by individuals who are allergic to moxifloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics. It is also not recommended for children under one year of age or for the treatment of certain conditions like gonococcal conjunctivitis or infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis in patients younger than 2 years.

Can MAXIFLOX Eye Drops be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is limited data on the use of MAXIFLOX during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It should only be used if the expected benefits outweigh potential risks to the fetus or infant. Consult your healthcare provider before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of MAXIFLOX Eye Drops?

The most common side effects include mild eye irritation or discomfort, which affects around 1-2% of patients. Other less common side effects include:

  • Eye-related effects: Pain, itching, redness, dry eyes, or swelling.
  • Systemic effects: Rare cases of headache, dizziness, or nausea.

In rare cases, severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

How should MAXIFLOX Eye Drops be stored?

Store MAXIFLOX eye drops at a temperature below 25°C (77°F) in their original packaging. Keep out of reach of children.

After opening the bottle, the drops should be used within 4 weeks. Do not use the product after its expiration date.
