What is Lindynette 20?

Lindynette 20 is a combined oral contraceptive pill that contains two active hormones: ethinylestradiol (20 micrograms) and gestodene (75 micrograms).

This combination works primarily by preventing ovulation, which means that it stops the ovaries from releasing an egg each month.

Additionally, it thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and alters the lining of the uterus, which makes it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.

Lindynette 20 is a low-dose contraceptive option that provides reliable pregnancy prevention when taken correctly.

How should Lindynette 20 be taken?

Lindynette 20 should be taken orally once a day at the same time each day. It’s important to take the pill in the order indicated on the pack. Each pack contains 21 tablets, which are taken daily for 21 days.

After finishing the 21 tablets, you should take a 7-day break during which you will likely experience a withdrawal bleed, similar to a period.

On the 8th day, even if bleeding has not stopped, you should start the next pack of Lindynette 20.

Consistency in taking the pill at the same time every day maximizes its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.

What happens if you miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Lindynette 20 and it’s been less than 12 hours since your scheduled time, take the missed pill as soon as you remember, and then take the next pill at your usual time. This ensures that contraceptive protection is maintained.

If more than 12 hours have passed, the effectiveness of the pill may be reduced. In this case, take the most recent missed pill immediately, even if it means taking two pills in one day. Continue taking the remaining pills at the usual time, but you should also use a barrier method of contraception, such as a condom, for the next 7 days to ensure you are protected from pregnancy. If you miss more than one pill in the same cycle, the risk of pregnancy increases, and you may need to follow additional guidance depending on when the pills were missed.

What are the side effects of Lindynette 20?

While Lindynette 20 is effective at preventing pregnancy, it can cause side effects in some women. Common side effects include:

  • Headaches: These can range from mild to severe, and may include migraines.
  • Nausea: Some women may feel nauseous, especially when they first start taking the pill.
  • Breast tenderness: This may include soreness or swelling of the breasts.
  • Mood changes: Hormonal changes can sometimes lead to mood swings, irritability, or even depression.
  • Irregular bleeding: Spotting or breakthrough bleeding may occur, especially during the first few months as your body adjusts to the hormones.

Serious side effects, though rare, can include blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism), stroke, or heart attack. Signs of serious side effects include severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, vision changes, or swelling and pain in the legs. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Who should not take Lindynette 20?

Lindynette 20 is not suitable for everyone. It should not be taken by women who are:

  • Pregnant or suspect they may be pregnant: The pill should not be used if you are already pregnant.
  • Breastfeeding: Hormones in the pill can reduce milk production and may be passed to the baby.
  • History of blood clots: If you have a history of venous or arterial thrombosis, this pill may increase your risk of developing clots.
  • Cardiovascular conditions: Women with a history of stroke, heart attack, or other serious heart conditions should avoid Lindynette 20.
  • Liver disease: If you have severe liver disease or liver tumors, you should not use this contraceptive.
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding: If you have abnormal bleeding of unknown cause, you should not take Lindynette 20 until it has been evaluated by a doctor.
  • Allergies to the ingredients: If you are allergic to any of the components of the pill, you should not use it.

Women who smoke, especially those over 35, should also be cautious as the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects increases with smoking.

How should Lindynette 20 be stored?

To maintain the effectiveness of Lindynette 20, it should be stored properly.

Keep the tablets in their original packaging to protect them from light and moisture.

Store them at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).

Always keep the medication out of reach of children and never use the pills after the expiration date printed on the package.

What should you do if you experience side effects?

If you experience side effects while taking Lindynette 20, it's important to monitor their severity and frequency. Common side effects like mild headaches, nausea, or mood changes often improve as your body adjusts to the hormones. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.

If you experience more severe side effects, such as symptoms of a blood clot (e.g., sudden leg pain, severe chest pain, shortness of breath), severe headaches, or vision changes, you should seek immediate medical attention. Your doctor may advise discontinuing the pill and switching to another form of contraception if these serious side effects occur.

Can Lindynette 20 interact with other medications?

Yes, Lindynette 20 can interact with other medications, potentially reducing its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Medications that induce liver enzymes, such as certain anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine) and antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin), can decrease the effectiveness of Lindynette 20, leading to breakthrough bleeding or unplanned pregnancy.

Other medications, such as some antivirals used in HIV treatment, may either increase or decrease the levels of contraceptive hormones in your blood. Additionally, certain herbal supplements, like St. John’s Wort, can also reduce the effectiveness of Lindynette 20
