What is Limenda?

Limenda is a vaginal suppository containing two active ingredients: Metronidazole (750 mg) and Miconazole nitrate (200 mg).

This combination medication is specifically designed to treat vaginal infections.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that targets bacterial infections, while Miconazole is an antifungal that combats yeast infections.

What is Limenda Used For?

Limenda is primarily used to treat the following conditions:

  • Vulvovaginitis caused by Candida albicans: This is a yeast infection that affects the vulva and vagina.
  • Bacterial vaginosis: A common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria.
  • Mixed vaginal infections: These are infections that involve both bacterial (like Gardnerella vaginalis) and anaerobic organisms.

What Should You Know Before Using Limenda?

Contraindications

Do not use Limenda if you have:

  • An allergy to Metronidazole, Miconazole, or any other imidazole derivatives.
  • Consumed alcohol during treatment or within 48 hours after finishing the treatment.
  • Taken Disulfiram within the past two weeks.
  • Epilepsy, severe liver dysfunction, or porphyria.
  • Are pregnant in the first trimester.
  • Are under 18 years of age.

Precautions

  • Monitoring: If treatment extends beyond 10 days, regular monitoring of blood counts and watching for adverse reactions like neuropathy is recommended.
  • Liver and Nervous System Concerns: Patients with existing liver or nervous system issues should use Limenda with caution. In rare cases, severe liver damage or nervous system problems could occur, especially in those with Cockayne syndrome.
  • Interaction with Other Medications: Limenda can interact with various medications, including anticoagulants, lithium, and certain anticonvulsants, among others. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Avoid using Limenda during the first trimester of pregnancy. If used later in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, the risks should be thoroughly discussed with a healthcare provider.

How to Use Limenda?

  • Dosage: Insert one suppository deep into the vagina at night for 7 days, or as prescribed by your doctor. For recurrent infections, a 14-day course may be recommended.
  • During Menstruation: It is not recommended to use the suppositories during menstruation as it might reduce their effectiveness.
