What is KOMBINIL® DUO?
KOMBINIL® DUO is a combination eye and ear drop solution that contains two active ingredients: ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid.
This medication is used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes and ears in both adults and children over the age of 8.
By combining an antibiotic with an anti-inflammatory agent, KOMBINIL® DUO is effective in managing infections while also reducing associated inflammation and discomfort.
What are the Uses of KOMBINIL® DUO?
KOMBINIL® DUO is prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections in the eyes and ears, including:
- Eye Infections:
- Corneal ulcers
- Superficial eye infections
- Acute and subacute conjunctivitis
- Keratitis
- Anterior uveitis
- Blepharitis and other eyelid inflammations
- Prevention and treatment of infections after eye injuries or surgeries
- Ear Infections:
- Acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes (OCOT)
- Acute otitis externa (swimmer’s ear)
It is important to follow official guidelines on the proper use of antibacterial agents to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
How Should KOMBINIL® DUO Be Used?
KOMBINIL® DUO is for topical use only, meaning it is applied directly to the affected area, either in the eyes or ears.
For Eye Infections:
- Corneal Ulcers: Start with 2 drops in the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then every 30 minutes for the rest of the day. On the second day, apply 2 drops every hour. From the third to the fourteenth day, apply 2 drops every 4 hours.
- Superficial Eye Infections: Apply 1-2 drops in the affected eye 4 times daily. For severe infections, this can be increased to every 2 hours during waking hours for the first two days.
- Other Eye Infections: Apply 1-2 drops every 4-6 hours, with possible intensification in the first 24-48 hours.
For Ear Infections:
- Acute Otitis Media: Apply 4 drops in the affected ear twice daily for 7 days.
- Acute Otitis Externa: Apply 4 drops in the affected ear twice daily for 7 days.
Patients should lie with the affected ear up during application and remain in this position for about 5 minutes to ensure the drops are fully absorbed.
What Precautions Should Be Taken When Using KOMBINIL® DUO?
- Hypersensitivity: Avoid use if you have a known allergy to ciprofloxacin, dexamethasone, or any other ingredient in the medication.
- Viral and Fungal Infections: This medication should not be used for viral infections like chickenpox or herpes simplex, or for fungal infections in the ear.
- Children: Not recommended for use in children under 8 years old for eye infections.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed, as there is limited information on the effects during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What Are the Potential Side Effects of KOMBINIL® DUO?
Common side effects include discomfort, redness in the eyes, and ear pain.
Less common effects may involve temporary blurred vision, corneal deposits, increased tear production, and ear itching.
If severe allergic reactions or symptoms such as tendon inflammation occur, discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately.
How Should KOMBINIL® DUO Be Stored?
Store KOMBINIL® DUO in a cool, dry place away from light, ideally between 15-25°C (59-77°F).
Once the bottle is opened, it should be used within 45 days.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiration date.
What Should You Do in Case of Overdose?
If you suspect an overdose, especially in case of accidental ingestion, rinse the eyes with water if applied excessively and seek medical attention.
Symptoms might include keratitis, redness, and eye irritation.
