What is Hexicon® (Chlorhexidine) 16 mg?
Hexicon® 16 mg is a vaginal suppository containing chlorhexidine, an antiseptic used to prevent and treat infections.
It is primarily utilized in gynecology to protect against sexually transmitted infections and to manage bacterial vaginosis and vaginitis.
The suppositories are used intravaginally and offer broad antimicrobial action.
Hexicon® can also be applied before gynecological procedures to prevent infections.

What is Hexicon® used for?
Hexicon® is used in several medical situations, including:
- Prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs): Hexicon® can help prevent infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, and others. It should be used within two hours after unprotected sexual intercourse to be effective.
- Prevention of gynecological infections before medical procedures: It is often used before surgeries, childbirth, abortions, and the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs).
- Treatment of vaginal infections: Hexicon® is effective for treating bacterial vaginosis, vaginitis, cervicitis, and vulvitis, including infections caused by Trichomonas and mixed infections.
Who should not use Hexicon®?
Hexicon® is not recommended for:
- Individuals with a known allergy to any of its components.
- Girls who have not yet started menstruating.
What precautions should be taken when using Hexicon®?
If you experience discomfort such as itching or burning after using the suppository, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider. Increased vaginal discharge may occur, and if it is light and clear, you can continue using the product. However, if the discharge becomes blood-tinged, it is advisable to stop and seek medical advice.
After handling the suppository, wash your hands to avoid contact with your eyes. Also, cleaning the external genitalia does not affect the effectiveness of the suppository.
Can Hexicon® interact with other medications?
Yes, Hexicon® should not be used alongside iodine-based medications.
It is also incompatible with detergents containing anionic groups such as sodium lauryl sulfate or soaps if used intravaginally.
Can Hexicon® be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Hexicon® is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
However, always consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication during these periods.
How should Hexicon® be used?
- For treatment: Insert one suppository twice a day. Treatment typically lasts 7-10 days but may be extended to 20 days if necessary.
- For prevention of STIs: Use one suppository within two hours after unprotected intercourse.
Always insert the suppository intravaginally after removing it from its packaging.
What are the possible side effects of Hexicon®?
Side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions like rash, itching, or burning.
