What is Herpevir® (Acyclovir) Ointment?

Herpevir® is a topical ointment containing 2.5% acyclovir, used to treat herpes simplex virus infections on the lips and face.

It works by inhibiting the replication of the virus, reducing the severity and duration of cold sores.

This antiviral ointment is specifically designed for external use and should be applied directly to the affected areas.

Herpevir® is effective in managing outbreaks of herpes labialis when used at the first signs of infection.


What Are the Uses of Herpevir® Ointment?

Herpevir® is primarily used for the treatment of:

  • Herpes Simplex Infections: Specifically, herpes labialis (cold sores) on the lips and face.


How Should Herpevir® Ointment Be Used?

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults and Children Over 12 Years: Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area.
  • Application Frequency: The recommended dosage is a strip of ointment (1.25 cm in length) for every 25 square centimeters of affected skin. This should be applied five times a day at approximately 4-hour intervals, excluding nighttime.


Method of Application:

  • External Use Only: Apply the ointment externally on the affected skin and avoid contact with the eyes. Before application, wash the affected area with soap and water and dry thoroughly. It is advisable to use rubber gloves or a finger cot to prevent spreading the infection.
  • Duration of Treatment: Treatment should last for at least 4 days. If healing has not occurred, treatment may continue for up to 10 days. If the condition persists after 10 days, consult a healthcare professional.


What Precautions Should Be Taken?

  • Hypersensitivity: Do not use if you have a known allergy to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any other component of the ointment.
  • Eye Contact: Avoid getting the ointment in the eyes.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of Herpevir® is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Children: Not recommended for use in children under 12 years old.
  • Immunocompromised Individuals: Those with compromised immune systems should seek medical advice before using this product.


What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Side effects are generally mild and may include:

  • Common: Redness, itching, peeling, or a burning sensation at the application site.

How Should Herpevir® Ointment Be Stored?

Store Herpevir® ointment in its original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F).

Keep it out of reach of children and do not use it after the expiration date.


What Should You Do in Case of Overdose?

If you apply more than the recommended amount, you might experience symptoms such as redness, peeling, or a burning sensation, which typically subside after discontinuing the ointment.

If an overdose occurs, stop using the ointment and consult a healthcare provider if necessary.
