Fastum® Gel (Ketoprofen) 2.5%

What is Fastum® Gel (Ketoprofen) 2.5%?
Fastum® Gel (Ketoprofen) 2.5% is a topical medication used to relieve pain and inflammation in muscles and joints.
It contains ketoprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing the production of substances in the body that cause pain and swelling.
Applied directly to the skin, the gel provides localized relief for conditions such as sprains, strains, bruises, and muscle stiffness.
Fastum® Gel is commonly used for the treatment of rheumatic pain and other injuries affecting the musculoskeletal system, helping to ease discomfort without the need for oral medications
How does Fastum® Gel work?
Fastum® Gel (Ketoprofen) 2.5% works by targeting the root cause of pain and inflammation in muscles and joints.
The key ingredient, ketoprofen, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits the activity of certain enzymes in the body, specifically cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2).
These enzymes are responsible for producing prostaglandins, which are chemicals that lead to inflammation, swelling, and pain when the body is injured or stressed.
Key Mechanisms of Action:
Inhibition of Prostaglandin Production:
- By blocking the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, Fastum® Gel reduces the formation of prostaglandins, which are the main mediators of pain and inflammation in the body. This decreases swelling and relieves discomfort in the affected area.
Localized Effect:
- Fastum® Gel is applied directly to the skin over the painful area. The active ingredient penetrates the skin layers and targets the underlying muscles and joints, providing a focused anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect without significant systemic absorption (i.e., it doesn't enter the bloodstream in high concentrations). This minimizes the risk of side effects commonly associated with oral NSAIDs.
Reduction of Pain Sensitivity:
- By lowering inflammation, Fastum® Gel also reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings in the affected region. This leads to a noticeable reduction in pain intensity, allowing for better mobility and comfort.
What is Fastum® Gel used for?
Fastum® Gel is used for the local treatment of pain caused by:
- Rheumatic conditions
- Muscle and joint injuries such as sprains, strains, and bruises
- Stiff neck muscles
- Lumbago (lower back pain)
Who should not use Fastum® Gel?
Fastum® Gel should not be used if you:

- Have experienced asthma or other allergic reactions when using NSAIDs
- Have a history of skin reactions to ketoprofen, perfumes, or UV blockers
- Are in the third trimester of pregnancy
- Have damaged skin, such as eczema or open wounds
- Are exposed to sunlight or UV light during and two weeks after treatment
How should Fastum® Gel be applied?
For adults and teenagers over 12 years:

- Gently massage the gel into the skin to enhance absorption
- Use a strip of gel about 5-10 cm long for each application, depending on the size of the area

It is recommended not to cover the treated area with airtight (occlusive) dressings.
Are there any side effects of Fastum® Gel?
Common side effects may include:
- Local skin reactions like redness, itching, or a burning sensation
- Rarely, severe reactions such as eczema or skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) can occur
If any skin reaction develops, stop using the gel and consult a healthcare provider.
Can Fastum® Gel be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
- During pregnancy: Fastum® Gel should be avoided, especially in the third trimester, as it may affect the baby’s cardiovascular and kidney functions.
- During breastfeeding: Its use is not recommended since there is no information on whether ketoprofen passes into breast milk.
What precautions should be taken while using Fastum® Gel?
- Avoid exposure to sunlight or UV light (including tanning beds) during and for two weeks after treatment to prevent photosensitivity reactions.
- Do not apply the gel to damaged skin or mucous membranes, and avoid contact with the eyes.
- Wash your hands after each application to prevent accidental contact with sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth.
How should Fastum® Gel be stored?
Store Fastum® Gel at temperatures below 30°C (86°F) and keep it out of reach of children.
