What is ENAM® (Enalapril)?
ENAM® (Enalapril) is a medication commonly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It belongs to the class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme inhibitors), which work by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow. This helps to lower blood pressure, reduce strain on the heart, and improve overall cardiovascular function. ENAM® is available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg tablet forms, containing enalapril maleate as the active ingredient.
What is the composition of ENAM® tablets?
Each ENAM® tablet contains:
- 2.5 mg tablet: Enalapril maleate 2.5 mg, anhydrous lactose, maleic acid, zinc stearate.
- 5 mg tablet: Enalapril maleate 5 mg, anhydrous lactose, maleic acid, zinc stearate.
- 10 mg tablet: Enalapril maleate 10 mg, anhydrous lactose, zinc stearate.
How does ENAM® work?
ENAM® works by blocking the enzyme responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a substance that causes blood vessels to narrow. By reducing the production of angiotensin II, ENAM® lowers blood pressure, decreases the workload on the heart, and improves blood flow. It also helps reduce the buildup of fluid in the lungs, making it beneficial for patients with heart failure.
What are the benefits of using ENAM®?
ENAM® offers several benefits, including:
- Lowering high blood pressure: Reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.
- Improving heart function: For patients with chronic heart failure, it helps reduce symptoms like shortness of breath and swelling.
- Supporting kidney health: In people with diabetes and hypertension, it can help protect the kidneys from damage.
- Long-lasting effect: ENAM® works throughout the day, providing stable blood pressure control.
How should you take ENAM®?
ENAM® tablets can be taken with or without food, usually once or twice daily, depending on your doctor’s instructions. For those not using diuretics, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day, which may be adjusted to a maintenance dose ranging from 10 mg to 40 mg per day. For patients taking diuretics, the starting dose is typically 2.5 mg to prevent low blood pressure (hypotension). Always follow your healthcare provider’s dosage recommendations.
What should you do if you miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of ENAM®, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
What are the possible side effects of ENAM®?
Common side effects of ENAM® include:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially after the first dose.
- Fatigue or weakness.
- Cough.
- Nausea.
Less common side effects may include low blood pressure, rash, or increased potassium levels, which can cause muscle weakness or heart rhythm issues.
If you experience swelling of the face, lips, or throat, seek immediate medical attention, as this could indicate a serious allergic reaction.
Who should not use ENAM®?
ENAM® is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this medication if you:
- Have a history of angioedema (swelling) related to ACE inhibitors.
- Are allergic to any ingredients in ENAM®.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have severe kidney disease or certain heart conditions, unless recommended by your doctor.
Can you use ENAM® with other medications?
ENAM® may interact with other medications, such as diuretics, potassium supplements, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These interactions can increase the risk of side effects like high potassium levels or decreased blood pressure control. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.
How should ENAM® be stored?
Store ENAM® tablets in a dry, dark place at a temperature below 25°C (77°F).
Keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not use the medication after the expiration date indicated on the packaging.
