What is Dropleks (Phenazone, Lidocaine) Ear Drops?
Dropleks Ear Drops are a combination medication designed for the local treatment of ear conditions.
These drops contain two active ingredients: Phenazone, which is a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory agent, and Lidocaine, a local anesthetic that helps numb the area and alleviate pain.
The product is intended for use in cases of middle ear infections where the eardrum is intact, offering symptomatic relief and pain management.
When Should Dropleks Ear Drops Be Used?
Dropleks Ear Drops are specifically indicated for the treatment and relief of pain associated with various types of middle ear infections, including:
- Acute exudative otitis media: An ear infection characterized by fluid accumulation behind the eardrum.
- Otitis media as a complication of flu: Middle ear infection that occurs as a secondary complication after the flu.
- Barotraumatic otitis: Ear discomfort and potential injury resulting from changes in atmospheric pressure, often experienced during air travel or diving.
What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Using Dropleks Ear Drops?
Before using Dropleks, it is important to ensure that the eardrum is not perforated. Using this medication when the eardrum is ruptured can lead to the active ingredients entering the systemic circulation, which may cause complications. Additionally, this product is contraindicated in individuals with:
- Allergies to any components of the medication, particularly phenazone or lidocaine, and their derivatives.
- Perforated eardrum.
- Infants under 1 month old.
- Breastfeeding women should avoid using this product unless deemed necessary by a healthcare provider.
Can Dropleks Be Used With Other Medications?
Dropleks can be used alongside other medications, such as pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, antiseptics, and antibiotics for both local and systemic use, without negative interactions.
However, if using another type of ear drop, it is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes between applications to prevent interference.
How Should Dropleks Ear Drops Be Used?
Dropleks is for local application only. The recommended dosage is 3-4 drops into the affected ear(s) 2-3 times a day. To avoid discomfort, it is advisable to warm the bottle in your hands before use. The treatment duration should not exceed 5 days, after which your healthcare provider may reassess your treatment plan.
What Are the Possible Side Effects of Dropleks Ear Drops?
Dropleks is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience mild side effects, such as:
- Irritation
- Redness
- Itching
If you experience these or any other side effects, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
How Should Dropleks Ear Drops Be Stored?
Dropleks should be stored in a cool, dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25ºC (77ºF), and out of reach of children.
Once opened, the drops should be used within 6 months. Do not use the product after its expiration date.
