Doxylan (Doxycycline) is an antibiotic. It’s used to treat infections such as chest infections, skin infections, rosacea, dental infections and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as a lot of other rare infections. It can also be used to prevent malaria if you’re travelling abroad.

Indications for use


Infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, intracellular pathogenic microorganisms (chlamydia, mycoplasma), rickettsia, borrelia (drug of choice); infectious diseases: Q fever, rocky mountain spotted fever, typhus, borreliosis, brucellosis, yersiniosis, bacillary and amoebic dysentery, tularemia, cholera, Lyme disease (stage I), actinomycosis, malaria, leptospirosis, trachoma, psulcytacosis. ; diseases of the ENT organs and lower respiratory tract (sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy), cholecystitis, cholangitis, peritonitis, proctitis, periodontitis, urinary tract infections, urogenital mycoplasmosis, inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs in the acute stage in women (endometritis), acute prostatitis, epididymitis, gonorrhea, syphilis, purulent infections of the skin and soft tissues, acne, infectious ulcerative keratitis. Prevention of surgical infections after medical abortion, colon surgery, prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum during short-term travel (less than 4 months) in the territory where Plasmodium resistance to chloroquine and / or pyrimethamine-sulfadoxine is noted.

 

Method of administration and dosage



  • Adults and children weighing more than 50 kg - on the first day 200 mg in 1-2 doses; then 100-200 mg per day.

  • Children over 8 years old weighing less than 50 kg - on the first day, a daily dose at the rate of 4 mg / kg at one time; then - 2-4 mg / kg per day.

  • Infections caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus: Treat for at least 10 days.

  • Gonorrhea: for men - 200-300 mg per day for 2-4 days or within one day, 2 times 300 mg with an interval of 1 hour; women - 200 mg per day for 5 days.

  • Primary and secondary syphilis: 300 mg per day for at least 10 days.

 

Contraindications


Hypersensitivity, porphyria, severe liver failure, leukopenia, pregnancy (second half), breastfeeding (for the period of treatment, you should refrain from breastfeeding), age up to 9 years (period of tooth development).


Side effect


Dizziness, sweating, vascular collapse, benign intracranial hypertension in adults and protrusion of fontanelles in children, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominalgia, diarrhea, constipation, dysphagia, glossitis, esophagitis, dysbacteriosis, fungal infections, reinfection infections, eutrophysiosis, persistent discoloration of tooth enamel, allergic reactions (rash, pruritus, Quincke's edema).


Interaction


Absorption reduces the simultaneous intake of iron preparations, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum, calcium or magnesium antacids, magnesium-containing laxatives, cholestyramine and colestipol.

Barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin reduce plasma concentrations and shorten the half-life (induction of monooxygenases and acceleration of biotransformation), which can lead to a decrease in the antimicrobial effect.

Reduces the bactericidal effect of penicillins.

Regular alcohol consumption increases T1 / 2.

Reduces the reliability of contraception and increases the frequency of "breakthrough" bleeding against the background of estrogen-containing oral contraceptives. Potentiates the effect of indirect anticoagulants.
