What is Clotrimazole Cream 1%?
Clotrimazole Cream 1% is a topical antifungal medication used to treat a variety of fungal skin infections.
The cream contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which belongs to a class of drugs known as imidazole and triazole derivatives.
It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, effectively treating conditions like athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections of the skin.
Clotrimazole is also used for treating infections of the external genitalia, such as candidal vulvovaginitis and balanitis.

Clotrimazole Cream 1% is effective against several types of fungal infections, including:
- Dermatophytosis: Fungal infections of the hands, feet, or torso caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis.
- Candidiasis: Infections of the skin and mucous membranes of the external genitalia, including diaper rash and intertrigo, caused by Candida species.
- Pityriasis versicolor: A skin condition caused by Malassezia furfur (also known as Pityrosporum orbiculare).
- Secondary Infected Mycoses: Fungal infections complicated by secondary bacterial infections (pyoderma).
What Precautions Should You Take When Using Clotrimazole Cream?
Before using Clotrimazole Cream, consider the following precautions:
- Hypersensitivity: Avoid using this cream if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients in the formulation.
- Genital Use and Latex Products: Clotrimazole Cream may damage latex contraceptives like condoms and diaphragms, reducing their effectiveness. Use alternative contraceptive methods during treatment and for at least five days after finishing the course.
- Eye Contact: Be careful to avoid getting the cream in your eyes.
- Ingestion: Do not swallow the cream.
How Should You Use Clotrimazole Cream?
For adults, apply a thin layer of Clotrimazole Cream to the affected areas 2-3 times daily. Make sure the area is clean and dry before application. The duration of treatment varies:
- Dermatophytosis: Treatment should continue for at least 4 weeks.
- Candidiasis: A minimum of 2 weeks of treatment is required.
- Pityriasis versicolor: Typically treated effectively within 1-3 weeks.
To prevent recurrence, continue using the cream for at least 2 weeks after symptoms disappear. Consult a healthcare provider if there is no improvement after 7 days of treatment.
What Are the Possible Side Effects of Clotrimazole Cream?
While side effects are rare, some individuals may experience the following:
- Allergic Reactions: Symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, or fainting.
- Local Reactions: Itching, rash, blisters, peeling, pain, swelling, burning, or irritation at the site of application.
