What is Berodual® N (Ipratropium + Fenoterol) Inhaler?

Berodual® N is a bronchodilator medication used for managing obstructive airway diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

It comes in an inhaler form, providing 200 doses in a 10 ml container.

The active ingredients in Berodual® N are ipratropium bromide and fenoterol hydrobromide. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic that helps relax the muscles around the airways, while fenoterol is a selective beta2-adrenergic agonist that also relaxes the airway muscles, making breathing easier.

How Does Berodual® N Work?

Berodual® N combines two active components to achieve a strong bronchodilatory effect.

Ipratropium bromide works by inhibiting the reflexes that cause airway constriction, thereby preventing the narrowing of the airways.

Fenoterol, on the other hand, selectively stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, leading to the relaxation of airway muscles.

This dual action helps to reduce bronchospasm and ease breathing in patients with obstructive airway conditions.

Who Should Use Berodual® N?

Berodual® N is indicated for the prevention and treatment of symptoms related to reversible bronchospasm, particularly in conditions like asthma and COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

It is suitable for adults and children over the age of six.

However, its use should be carefully monitored, especially in those with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, glaucoma, or hyperthyroidism.

How Should Berodual® N Be Used?

The dosage of Berodual® N should be tailored to the individual needs of the patient.

For acute bronchospasm, the usual dose is two inhalations. If relief is not achieved within five minutes, an additional two inhalations may be taken.

However, if four inhalations do not alleviate the symptoms, medical attention should be sought immediately.

For long-term management, one to two inhalations are recommended three times daily, not exceeding eight inhalations in 24 hours.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Berodual® N?

Common side effects of Berodual® N may include dry mouth, cough, tremors, headache, and dizziness.

Less common side effects can involve cardiovascular issues such as tachycardia or palpitations, gastrointestinal discomfort, and eye-related problems like increased intraocular pressure.

If any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, immediate medical attention is necessary.

What Precautions Should Be Taken?

  • Eye Protection: Avoid getting the aerosol into your eyes as it may cause irritation or glaucoma.
  • Regular Monitoring: Patients with severe heart disease, diabetes, or other chronic conditions should use Berodual® N under strict medical supervision.
  • Proper Usage: The inhaler should be used as prescribed, and patients must be instructed on the correct inhalation technique to ensure the medication is effective.
  • Storage: Berodual® N should be stored at temperatures below 25°C (77°F) and kept out of the reach of children.

What Should You Do in Case of an Overdose?

Overdose symptoms may include palpitations, high blood pressure, tremors, or increased heart rate.

In such cases, stop using the inhaler and seek immediate medical assistance.

Beta-blockers may be administered under medical supervision to counteract the effects, but they must be used with caution to avoid exacerbating bronchospasm.
