What is Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg?

Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg is a well-known medicine used to help relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever.

Each tablet contains 500 mg of acetylsalicylic acid, a salicylate medicine with analgesic and antipyretic properties.

It may be used for headache, toothache, sore throat, back pain, muscle pain, joint pain, and menstrual pain. It is also used to lower high body temperature in adults and adolescents over 16 years during colds and other infectious or inflammatory conditions.

This medicine should be taken responsibly, following the recommended dose and safety information.

It is not suitable for everyone, especially people with certain bleeding, stomach, kidney, liver, or allergy-related conditions.

What is Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg used for?

Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg tablets are intended for the short-term treatment of mild or moderate pain, including headache, toothache, sore throat, back and muscle pain, joint pain, and menstrual pain.

It may also be used as a fever-reducing medicine in adults and adolescents over 16 years when body temperature rises during colds or other infectious and inflammatory illnesses.

How should Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg tablets be taken?

This medicine is taken by mouth after food with water. Adults may take 250 mg to 500 mg as a single dose. The maximum single dose is 1,000 mg, equal to two 500 mg tablets. The maximum daily dose is 3,000 mg, equal to six 500 mg tablets.

The dose may be repeated 3 to 4 times daily if needed, with an interval of at least 4 hours between doses. Adolescents over 16 years may take 250 mg twice daily, with a maximum daily dose of 750 mg.

For fever, the usual dose is 500 mg to 1,000 mg when body temperature is above 38.5°C or 101.3°F. In people with a history of febrile seizures, use may begin when temperature is above 37.5°C or 99.5°F. Do not use for more than 4 days without consulting a healthcare professional.

Who should not use Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg?

Do not use this medicine in case of hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid, other salicylates, or any ingredient in the tablet. It is also contraindicated in active stomach or intestinal ulcers, bleeding disorders, increased bleeding tendency, severe kidney or liver failure, acute heart failure, gout, aortic dissecting aneurysm, portal hypertension, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in children or adolescents under 16 years.

It should not be used together with methotrexate at doses of 15 mg per week or more. People with asthma linked to acetylsalicylic acid intolerance, nasal polyps, or recurrent sinus problems should avoid use.

What precautions are important before use?

Use caution if you have a history of stomach ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, asthma, allergies, reduced kidney function, liver problems, heart circulation problems, heavy menstrual bleeding, or high uric acid levels. Acetylsalicylic acid may increase bleeding risk, including during minor surgery or dental procedures.

Check that other medicines you take do not also contain acetylsalicylic acid to avoid accidental overdose.

Can Acetylsalicylic Acid 500 mg interact with other medicines?

Yes. Important interactions may occur with anticoagulants, antiplatelet medicines, heparin, thrombolytic medicines, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, glucocorticoids, methotrexate, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, digoxin, antidiabetic medicines, valproic acid, diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, antacids, activated charcoal, pemetrexed, deferasirox, and alcohol.

Combining several medicines that affect bleeding may increase the risk of bruising, nosebleeds, gum bleeding, stomach bleeding, or prolonged bleeding.

What side effects may occur?

Common side effects include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Less common effects include skin reactions and other signs of hypersensitivity.

Rare but serious reactions may include breathing difficulty, asthma attack, low blood pressure, swelling, severe allergic reaction, stomach or intestinal ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation of the digestive tract, and severe skin reactions. Very rarely, liver test changes may occur.
