What is Divigel® (Transdermal Estradiol Gel) 0.1%?

Divigel® is a transdermal gel containing estradiol, a form of estrogen.

It is used primarily in hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women.

The gel delivers estradiol through the skin directly into the bloodstream, helping to relieve symptoms of menopause.

By bypassing the liver, Divigel® reduces the risk of certain side effects compared to oral estrogen therapy.

This treatment is particularly effective in managing hot flashes, preventing osteoporosis, and improving urogenital health.

How does Divigel® work?

Divigel® works by delivering estradiol through the skin directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver, which reduces the likelihood of certain side effects associated with oral estrogen therapy.

Once absorbed, estradiol mimics the natural hormone by binding to estrogen receptors in various tissues, including the uterus, breasts, and bones.

This helps alleviate symptoms of menopause and prevents osteoporosis, particularly in the spine, by maintaining bone density.

What are the benefits of using Divigel®?

Divigel® offers several benefits, especially for postmenopausal women experiencing estrogen deficiency:

  • Relief from menopausal symptoms: It helps reduce hot flashes, night sweats, and other vasomotor symptoms.
  • Prevention of osteoporosis: By maintaining bone density, Divigel® helps prevent fractures related to osteoporosis.
  • Improved urogenital health: It alleviates symptoms of vaginal dryness and discomfort associated with estrogen loss.

How should you apply Divigel®?

To apply Divigel®, follow these steps:

  1. Choose the Application Area: Apply the gel to clean, dry skin on one of the following areas: the lower abdomen, lower back, shoulders, or upper arms. Avoid applying it to your breasts, face, or any irritated skin.

  2. Use the Correct Amount: Your doctor will prescribe a specific dose, typically starting with 1 gram of gel. Use the entire prescribed amount, spreading it thinly over the area.

  3. Let It Dry: After applying the gel, allow it to dry completely before putting on clothes. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.

  4. Rotate Application Sites: To prevent skin irritation, rotate the areas where you apply the gel. For example, if you apply it on your lower abdomen today, choose your lower back or shoulder tomorrow.

  5. Avoid Washing the Area: Do not wash the area where you applied the gel for at least one hour to ensure proper absorption.

  6. Wash Your Hands: After applying the gel, wash your hands thoroughly to remove any residue and avoid accidental transfer to other parts of your body or other people.

What precautions should you take when using Divigel®?

Before starting Divigel®, it’s essential to discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider, particularly if you have conditions like breast cancer, liver disease, or a history of blood clots.

Regular monitoring, including mammograms and pelvic exams, is recommended during treatment.

Divigel® is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What are the potential side effects of Divigel®?

Like all medications, Divigel® may cause side effects.

Common side effects include skin irritation at the application site, headaches, and breast tenderness.

More severe side effects, such as an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and breast cancer, may occur, especially with long-term use.

It’s important to report any unusual symptoms, such as unexplained vaginal bleeding or severe headaches, to your healthcare provider promptly.

How should Divigel® be stored?

Divigel® should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F) and should be kept out of reach of children.

Do not freeze the product, and ensure it is stored in its original packaging to protect it from light and moisture.

The gel has a shelf life of three years, so always check the expiration date before use.
